Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) has hailed the benefits of modular-building solutions when installing Local Ambulance Response Points across Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
Market leading modular building expert Portakabin was commissioned by YAS to design, manufacture and install five local ambulance response points, as part of the national drive by the NHS to implement a “hub and spoke” model for ambulance services.
The response points provide ambulance crews with kitchen and mess facilities, toilets, and space to relax when taking breaks or when stood down. They are located in areas of peak demand, so crews remain within the community and are able to respond quickly to emergency calls and patient needs.
Under the Hub and Spoke model the local ambulance response points are the spokes and Doncaster ambulance station, which was fully refurbished in 2020 is the hub, a central base providing management, training, fleet maintenance, vehicle cleaning and preparation facilities.
YAS opted for quality finishes, both internally and externally and feedback from our staff has been extremely positive. We worked closely with the Portakabin team, to ensure we catered for the practical needs of our ambulance crews whilst creating a relaxing environment which is comfortable whenever required. Modular buildings provide an ideal solution for our local ambulance response points and Portakabin was able to provide a full design and build service including the provision of ambulance hard standings, external landscaping and connection to all services within weeks of YAS placing orders.
Portakabin Bid Manager Helen Woodroffe added:
“We’ve been delighted with the response to this project and the real results it is achieving, both for the ambulance crews themselves and the community they’re serving.
“The 10m x 4m modular buildings have been designed to let in as much natural light as possible, with full height windows, but with one-way film to ensure privacy, heating and air conditioning creating a constant comfortable temperature with plenty of space for vital rest and relaxation. Defibrillators have been installed outside each building as an added service to the local community.
“The modular solution is proving highly beneficial to a wide range of clients across the health service and many other sectors, where high quality, accessible buildings are needed.”
