Portakabin was contracted to deliver two separate specialist theatres, complete with a central plant room following consultation with the Trust’s team.
Queen Victoria Hospital is a specialist NHS hospital providing life-changing reconstructive surgery, burns care and rehabilitation services for people who have been injured through accidents or illness.
The single storey Portakabin buildings are located between existing structures on the busy hospital site. The benefits of a modular building solution mean the theatres could be added to in order to support the future development of the hospital’s estate.
For now, they address capacity on site for much needed day surgery and the addition of a central plant room for facilities eases access for general maintenance. Each theatre building contains an operating theatre complete with surgeon panels and specialist M&E fit out, anaesthetic room, prep areas, scrub areas and dirty utility.
Ordered in December, the theatres were handed over to the Trust in June 2022.
Nick Griffin, Divisional Managing Director for Portakabin comments: “The Trust approached Portakabin knowing we would be able to deliver these specialist buildings within the six-month time frame. The surgery performed in these operating theatres is day surgery only and does not require general anaesthetic meaning the additional space increases overall patient flow.”
As a leading specialist surgical hospital for the South East, theatre capacity is vital. Our two new modular theatres give us the ability to treat more patients in a timely way and maintain a high level of patient care. Located apart from our main theatre block, the modular theatres give us additional flexibility and resilience, and take our total number of theatres to 12.
