Portakabin is shortlisted for seven awards at the Modern Methods of Construction Awards 2024
Portakabin is thrilled to be shortlisted for a number of awards across various different categories including ‘Best Temporary Building Project’, ‘Project of the Year – Education’ and an individual nomination for ‘Women in Modern Methods of Construction Award’ for Penny Carey.
The MMC awards celebrate innovative and inspiring uses of modern methods of construction over the past year, and we are thrilled to have had a number of outstanding projects recognised.
The projects and categories Portakabin have been shortlisted for are:
Best Temporary Building Project (Education / Healthcare / Events / Other) - Northstowe Community Centre
South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) approached Portakabin to design and deliver a temporary community space in partnership with local groups while a permanent structure is built on the adjacent site. Complete with an external vinyl wrap and canopy, landscaped exterior and cantilever partition in the main hall to allow for mixed use space, the finished centre is a dedicated space for the entire community. The temporary building is available for a range of groups and users including the local food bank, Rainbows, arts and crafts activities, a youth café, local entrepreneurs, birthday parties, a range of NHS community services and more. Project of the Year for Commercial / Retail / Offices - Fierce Beer
Fierce Beer contacted Portakabin in early 2023 to design and deliver a high-quality MMC solution with a quick turnaround time. Five modules in total were precision-built by Portakabin at its manufacturing facility in York and successfully delivered to the site in Aberdeen. Using various styles of module, they were able to be seamlessly linked, offering the client a flexible solution to meet their needs. The finished building has branded vinyl wrapping on the exterior, an upgraded internal floor, air conditioning, an outdoor canopy, and is fully accessible to ensure everyone’s needs can be met. Project of the Year Education (Early Years & Primary) - Unity Academy
Portakabin provided a new, purpose-built Alternative Provision (AP) school primary in Kidderminster in September 2023. This is the second project to be awarded to Portakabin under the Department for Education DfE MMC1 framework. Unity Academy is made up of 17 custom-designed modules, compromising of eight classrooms, associated hall, and resource space. Find out more about this project
Project of the Year Education (Early Years & Primary) - Mundford Nursery
Portakabin completed a turnkey nursery building to support early years learning in the local community in October 2023. With the local nursery announcing it was planning to close, there was concern from the community about early years provision for nursery and pre-school places. A decision was made to extend the existing primary school, creating new facilities for up to 60 children and supporting staff. Find out more about this project
Project of the Year Education (Secondary & Higher) - The Bridge Easton SEND School
In January 2023, Portakabin achieved a noteworthy accomplishment, completing the design, delivery and installation of a new special educational needs school in Norfolk. The Bridge Easton school, which is part of The Bridge Multi Academy Trust, was the first school awarded to Portakabin under the Department for Education (DfE) MMC1 framework. The building needed to provide 170 places for children with learning and cognition needs aged from 4 to 19 years, as well as specific configurations such as medical treatment rooms and sensory rooms. Project of the Year Education (Secondary & Higher) - Silverdale School
After several years in the planning, Silverdale School officially opened its new building that was built and designed by Portakabin, in November 2023. The space this building provides will, by 2027, result in an additional 300 students, including those with special educational needs, who will be able to access high quality education within their own catchment area. Silverdale School is the perfect example of how a modular solution can be designed, installed and delivered to meet the exact standards of an education Trust, without ever compromising on quality or creativity. Women in Modern Methods of Construction Award - Penny Carey
Portakabin nominated Dr. Penny Carey, Sustainability Lead Design & Engineering, for the Women in Modern Methods of Construction award. Penny is passionate about her industry with over 35 years’ experience in M&E engineering and sustainable building design. She has a proven track record in developing effective sustainable building design solutions and actively promotes this within her role at Portakabin. Penny’s hard work, commitment and knowledge as an engineer is empowering to all.
The awards will be held in Birmingham on 8 May 2024.
