The Requirements
The University of Edinburgh embarked on a major refurbishment of the Grade A listed David Hume Tower to create a contemporary new teaching hub in the central area. The award winning Page/Park Architects project was designed to create a new sunken garden with glazed links to the David Hume Tower lecture theatres and directly onto George Square. The project required toilet facilities to be decanted to a podium roof area of the building for 78 weeks during ongoing work.

The Solution
John Hart, Project Manager, University of Edinburgh, says: “This was a complex project as an additional steel structure was required to support the additional weight of the toilets and space was extremely limited.
"Portaloo worked closely with us to define what was required and provided a full service, managing the installation of four toilet buildings as well as a fully compliant accessible walkway.
"They undertook the management of all connections to the water service and ensured that the facilities were operational with the minimum of disruption. It was a genuine turnkey service that ensured that installation of high-quality interim toilet facilities and the associated works was completed on time and on budget.”
Four Portaloo toilet blocks provided accessible male and female use facilities, with full high-quality fittings in a layout designed to meet the required specifications. The toilet blocks provided domestic-standard amenities for students and staff.
The Portaloo toilets provided exactly the solution we required during the refurbishment and the team at Portaloo were really helpful and accommodating throughout the project.
