The Requirement
Norfolk County Council identified the need for an additional new special educational needs school at Easton near Norwich as part of its £120 million five-year transformation programme, which pledged to create at least 500 new specialist education places. The Department for Education provided construction and Norfolk City Council the required services and access.
The building needed to provide 170 places for children with learning and cognition needs aged from 4 to 19 years, as well as specific configurations such as medical treatment rooms and sensory rooms.
The Bridge Easton School was the first project to be awarded to Portakabin on the Department of Education’s MMC1 framework. It was funded by the Department for Education following a successful bid to the Government’s free school programme by the county council.

The Solution
Designed specifically for the Department for Education and precision-engineered by Portakabin at its manufacturing facility in York, the school opened on schedule, providing purpose-built facilities including a forest school area and a specialist treatment unit for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
With total works completed in less than 12 months, Portakabin constructed 60 custom modules offsite with installation onsite taking just two weeks.
Boasting exceptional thermal performance and improved daylight for the comfort of both pupils and teachers, the completed site also includes on-site staff and visitor parking, minibus and taxi drop-off points, sports pitches, a MUGA court, outdoor play areas and a garden designed to encourage children with learning and cognition needs to engage and enjoy.
It has been a pleasure to work with Portakabin to create our new school. Attention to detail in both the design and build process has been second to none. Portakabin has ensured that the building and its facilities are right for a complex needs school. Our students have settled quickly, and already feel very at home in their new surroundings.
