The Requirements
When The Queen Katherine School applied to become a Multi-Academy Trust, having been granted Teaching School status, it needed a new Centre for Leadership and Learning to use as a training and conference venue for teachers and leaders.

The Solution
Portakabin worked with Capita Property & Infrastructure to construct a single-storey facility using its Portakabin Design and Build modular building solution. The new building features a large conference space for up to 100 people, reception area, office, committee room and toilets with disabled access.
Full-height glazing to the front and rear elevations creates a distinctive exterior, which is finished in red and grey to match the school’s colours. The new building is linked to an existing administrative block.
The modules were delivered to site around 60 per cent complete, with plumbing, electrics and high-performance concrete floor all pre-installed. The building was handed over after just four weeks on site, with work carried out during the school holidays to minimise disruption to teaching.
The flexibility of the Portakabin Design and Build solution means that the school has the option to add a second floor in future, without the need to vacate the building.
Stephen Wilkinson, Executive Head Teacher of The Queen Katherine School, says: “We are absolutely thrilled with our new Centre for Leadership and Learning. Site-based construction simply was not an option for us because it could not have been completed in time and it would have impacted on the daily running of the school.
“The glazing looks great and it has really helped to create an exceptional and unique exterior – you would never know that it was manufactured off site. The team delivering the Portakabin Design and Build solution went the extra mile to ensure the finish of the building matched our precise requirements.”
We are very impressed with the high-quality finish throughout and when I show anyone around the new building they all comment on how fantastic it looks – it is totally fit for purpose. The Portakabin Design and Build solution met our challenging timescales, the overall performance was faultless and we would absolutely recommend it to other schools.
