The Requirements
The Scottish Government is doubling nursery hours between 2018 and 2020, so there is a country-wide requirement for more nursery buildings. Fife Council was exploring ways to build high-quality new nurseries and, after detailed scrutiny of different construction methods, selected a Portakabin solution.

The Solution
Portakabin worked with the council to create a building that fulfilled all of the school’s requirements. The Modular Nursery features a dedicated room for younger children, with toilets and a nappy-changing room. There are two spacious areas for three-to-four year olds, each with a capacity of 40 children. There is a spacious servery and dining area, as well as a separate family room, kitchen, staff facilities and dedicated learning space for an additional 25 children with facilities.
The 558m2 building has 3.2m-high ceilings throughout, giving it a spacious, airy feel. It is connected to the existing school via a link structure built using a timber kit. Portakabin provided a complete turn-key service, from helping Fife Council attain planning permission and Building Warrant approvals, through to installing all foundations and constructing and fitting out the building. Portakabin even installed a CCTV security access system, outdoor fencing, a soft-pour play area and a new tarmac playground. Fife Council handed the site over to Portakabin in May, and the building was completed just three months later – in time for the start of the new academic year. Diarmid says: “We were very pleased with the way Portakabin managed the project, which ran exactly to schedule. The clean, self-contained nature of modular construction meant Portakabin was able to segregate the construction site completely from the working school. It meant the school could safely remain open throughout the construction process, with no impact on the children’s education.”
We now use the Lynburn nursery building as a showcase for the capabilities of modular construction. We think you really need to experience the building for yourself to appreciate its quality, and we’ve had a lot of interest from other organisations who want a building just like this one!
