The Requirements
Rapid expansion of scheduled flights at Inverness Airport meant that the departure lounge urgently needed to be enlarged. The airport decided to move the international arrivals area out into a new building to make room for a larger departure area within the main terminal. A new building was required quickly to house the arrivals facility, which needed to meet stringent UK Border Force security specifications.

The Solution
Dan Mason, Apron Operations & Safety Manager at Inverness Airport, says: “Hitting the deadline for completion was critical. The short timescale meant that modular buildings were the ideal solution and, through main contractor Kier, Portakabin was appointed to provide the building. They promised to meet our deadline and the strict specifications imposed by UK Border Force.”
Portakabin created a bespoke new arrivals facility using its energy-efficient Ultima building system. The 381m2 building houses a UK Border Force office and high-security server room, an interview room and HM Customs area, as well as a large open-plan baggage reclaim area.
Dan continues: “The Border Force requirements for the server room were incredibly demanding. They required reinforced walls, twin air-conditioning units and specific secure door furniture. They also wanted the floor to be reinforced so it could support an X-ray machine in future. Portakabin took it all in their stride, adapting the building accordingly and complying with all the stipulations.”
The 12 modules were delivered and connected on schedule, followed by a programme of on-site fitting out and furnishing. A ‘land-side’ compound was created for the construction site to keep the building works separate from the airport’s ‘air-side’ operations.
The building is performing well, and using the new arrivals area seems to be a hassle-free experience for passengers. The UK Border Force staff are delighted with the building, which is working very well for them and has fulfilled all of their demanding security requirements.
