The Requirements
Hayes School is a Foundation School for more than 1,500 pupils aged 11 to 18 years. The school needed to expand its accommodation with eight new classrooms in time for the start of the new academic year. The additional teaching space would prevent the school having to continue splitting departments over different parts of the existing building. The construction programme needed to work within the school calendar and minimise disruption to teaching. The new building also needed to complement its attractive parkland setting.

The Solution
Portakabin manufactured a two-storey teaching block for the school’s English department, using its advanced Portakabin Design and Build solution. The building comprises 22 steel-framed modules, each measuring 12 metres long. These were manufactured off site in the Portakabin factory, then craned into position on the school site during the holidays to reduce disruption to staff and pupils.
Completed on time and on budget just three months after work started on site, the building features large picture windows and a variety of claddings, including timber, render and blue powder-coated panels, which add interest and help to blend the building into its picturesque location. Kieran Osborne, Head Teacher at Hayes School, says: “The quality of finish, both internally and externally, is excellent. Portakabin performed very well, were highly professional throughout and kept us fully informed at every stage. The off-site method was cost-effective, convenient and fast and we are delighted with the end result, which means we no longer have to split departments over different parts of the school.”
The new facilities are first class. The project team did a great job of meeting our requirements and the challenging timescale. Everyone – from governors and staff to our students – are very positive and enthusiastic about the new building.
