The Requirements
Crofton Academy was keen to build a new sixth form facility, and Wakefield College wanted to extend its own post-16 provision in the region. The two institutions formed a partnership to create a new sixth form centre on the Crofton Academy site.

The Solution
Jon Howard, Director of Estates at Wakefield College, says: “We appointed Portakabin to construct the building because they gave us all the assurances we needed that they could deliver the standard of building we required, within our budget and within the limited programme time.”
The college chose the Portakabin Design and Build modular building system to create the new sixth form, because of its versatility, energy efficiency, durability and aesthetics. Designs drawn up by P+HS Architects were used to devise a two-storey, 528m2 building, featuring classrooms, study areas, tutorial rooms, a common room, offices, toilets and a lift.
Designs were finalised at the end of January and Portakabin agreed to hand over the building on 6 June, ready for fitting out before September.
Jon continues: “Many of us thought the hand-over date would have to be put back, but they assured us they could do it – and they did. In fact, they did everything exactly as promised, craning the modules into position over the Easter holiday and completing the building ready for hand over after just 13 weeks on site. Not only that, but this was the first building I have ever received with absolutely no defects."
This was a complex project involving many different partners and consultants, which could easily have become difficult to manage. Portakabin succeeded through excellent, clear communication at every stage. The site manager liaised closely with the school, so that this large new building was completed with no disruption whatsoever to normal school operations.
