The Requirements
With increasing numbers of employees cycling to work, the shower and changing room facilities at the vast Airbus manufacturing plant in Bristol were becoming overcrowded. When the Bike Users Group on site put in a request for additional better-quality changing facilities, the site management team set about sourcing an appropriate building to cater for existing cyclists and to encourage even more people to cycle to work.

The Solution
Simon Pitura, Project Manager at Airbus, says: “We investigated the possibility of constructing a traditional building, with cladding to match the other structures on site, but the cost was prohibitive. We already have a number of Portakabin buildings on site, so we looked into the modular building options with a couple of suppliers. The all-steel buildings from Portakabin offered the best solution.”
Portakabin worked with the team at Airbus to develop a bespoke building design for the new changing and shower facility. The solution comprised two linked Portakabin Solus buildings, offering bright, well-insulated and well-ventilated interiors within a robust and attractive building that complemented the other buildings on site.
The interior was fitted out to a high specification to meet the requirements set by Airbus. It incorporated 12 high-quality showers in individual cubicles, coat hooks and bench seating, lockers, non-slip flooring throughout, plus a separate drying room.
Simon continues: “The building is fitted out to a high standard. Crucially, as well as providing permanent-quality facilities, it gives us the flexibility for relocation in future. It is located in an area that’s likely to be redeveloped in the next five years, so we will simply be able to move it to another part of the site when necessary.”
The two Solus buildings were fitted out internally at the Portakabin factory so they could be installed and completed on the Airbus site in the shortest possible time, to minimise disruption. The buildings were delivered and connected on the agreed date, and Portakabin constructed a concrete ramp to provide easy access for everyone.
We looked into the modular building options with a couple of suppliers. The all-steel buildings from Portakabin offered the best solution. The building looks great and is fitted out to a high standard. Crucially, as well as providing permanent-quality facilities, it gives us the flexibility for relocation in future.
